The provision of health and care services has become more complex, costly and intensive. It must be provided within ever shorter time frames, in increasingly complex organisations and beyond their boundaries, and must take changing social conditions into account. Not least, the ageing population, fewer births, migration and ethnic change are leading to changing needs in care provision. That is why highly qualified healthcare professions have a future – all the more so when they use scientifically based measures whose quality is controlled. With our Nursing & Healthcare Management programme, we prepare you specifically to play an important role in meeting these challenges and helping to shape the healthcare management of tomorrow.

The most important points at a glance

Study duration and shortening

The standard duration of the programme is 6 semesters (3 years).

If applicants already have completed vocational training as a geriatric nurse in addition to the formal admission requirements

  • as a geriatric nurse
  • as a healthcare and nursing professional
  • as a health and paediatric nurse or
  • in therapeutic professions (e.g. occupational or physiotherapy),

the skills acquired in their initial vocational training can be recognised for the first year of study. They will be placed in the third semester, thus shortening the duration of their studies to four semesters (two years).

For other professional qualifications in the field of healthcare, your credit options will be assessed on an individual basis.

What jobs are available to you: Career prospects

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will receive an internationally recognised Bachelor of Arts degree. The Nursing & Health Management (B.A.) degree provides comprehensive knowledge for administrative and organisational tasks in various health and social care institutions.

Please note that, in accordance with Section 71 of SGB XI, professional certification as a nursing specialist, paediatric nurse, nurse or geriatric nurse is required for management positions in outpatient or inpatient care facilities. Without this state certification and two years of practical experience in the nursing profession within the last eight years, management roles in such care facilities are not legally accessible.

With professional certification in nursing and healthcare in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act:

  • Management tasks in outpatient, semi-inpatient and inpatient care facilities, e.g. as nursing service manager, residential area manager or group manager

With or without professional certification in nursing and healthcare in accordance with the Nursing Professions Act:

  • Management positions in hospitals, e.g. as nursing service manager, department manager, ward manager or division manager
  • Management of healthcare facilities, e.g. in therapeutic practices (physiotherapy and occupational therapy), medical supply stores
  • Work for cost bearers and insurance companies as well as in supervisory bodies
  • Administrative tasks in healthcare facilities, such as human resources, controlling, quality management, logistics, marketing or purchasing

Depending on the elective modules and specialisations chosen, a degree in Health Management also qualifies graduates for positions in project development and project work. The Bachelor's degree can also be used as a basis for further Master's studies.
