What to expect during your studies: Future-oriented programme profile

The programme focuses on interactive (app/web/game design) and linear media (film/video/animation). In these areas, students realise various creative projects of their own during the course of their studies in Digital Media Design. Interdisciplinary electives with the Graphic Design programme support the development of individual specialisations. This gives you the opportunity to develop both creatively and personally. Studying in small groups and intensive academic support facilitate this process.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with the necessary technical, methodological and social skills and to train them to become independently thinking, team-oriented graduates who are scientifically, technically and creatively proficient. In addition, we consider raising awareness of social change among our students to be an important prerequisite for gaining a foothold in the creative industry, for example as a media designer in Dresden or beyond.

From conception to professional implementation, students go through all the steps of digital production during their studies. This ranges from animated films and short feature films to games and interactive applications.

The high proportion of project-oriented work completed during the programme is a special feature of the course and reflects its practical orientation. Cooperation projects with partners from business, science and culture are also characteristic of the practice-oriented teaching approach of the Digital Media Design programme.

Upon completion of your studies, you will be qualified to work in both advisory and executive roles in the field of digital media production. Graduates are familiar with the basics of starting a business and media law and are able to set up their own media service businesses after graduation.

What jobs are available to you: Career prospects

Upon successful completion of your studies, you will receive the internationally recognised Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Digital Media Design. Projects from the Digital Media Design programme

What our partners say

Philipp Munzert | krawall & wunder Ltd.

"Working with FHD is a real win for us. With Maxim and Lama, we have been able to bring two committed and talented young professionals into our team – as a working student and front-end developer, they bring fresh perspectives and valuable ideas to our projects. We are delighted to give young talents early insights into practical work and to work together on real digital solutions."

Daniel Zenziper | FLIGHTSEEING

"Cornelius, a student of Digital Media Design, has developed tremendously during his five months with us and gained valuable practical experience in numerous projects. In addition, he was able to further develop his creative and technical skills in DaVinci Resolve and After Effects in numerous smaller projects. Through continuous feedback, he refined his highly independent work and took the opportunity to deepen his skills in a practical setting."

Dr Anne-Julie Zichner | Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS

"The Digital Media Design programme lays the foundation for successful science communication at Fraunhofer IPMS. As a Digital Media Design student, you will have the opportunity to actively shape our institute's communication work and make research and development visible to the public. You will apply the specialised knowledge you have acquired during your studies in graphic design and video production, e.g. in directing, camera, sound, lighting and editing, both in the institute's own video studio and in the clean room. It is important to us that you also have your own project as a working student or intern, which you will supervise from conception to final implementation. With us, you can put your theory to the test in practice."

Fabian Schmidt | Die Filmagentur

"To work professionally in the media sector, you need a good sense of the right tone, mood and impact of media products. To achieve this, it is important to master your craft – from technical aspects and the use of professional software to project planning. The rest can only be learned through practical application, and that is exactly what the Digital Media Design programme here in Dresden is optimally geared towards."

Theodor Glöer | Blackfire Medien GmbH

"Our collaboration with students from Dresden University of Applied Sciences has been very successful. We have supervised several students from the Media Informatics & Media Design department, one of whom has remained with us after completing her studies."

Arnd Wenzel | Overpics

"In our view, the Digital Media Design degree programme fills a major gap in Dresden's educational offerings. Here, skills and abilities with a very high practical relevance are taught. This enables students to take on responsibility in customer projects right from day one of their internship. We are particularly delighted when graduates later enrich our team."

Yvonne Maurice-Demourioux | Webit GmbH

"We have already welcomed several students and graduates of the Digital Media Design programme to our team. Thanks to the practical techniques and methods they learned at FHD, as well as their keen sense of form, colour and digital imagery, they continue to successfully support us in designing innovative web projects for renowned clients."

Ralf Kukula | Director/Managing Director, Balance Film GmbH

"As an animation film producer, Balance Film is always on the lookout for well-trained and motivated colleagues. We are also constantly striving to strengthen our production location. FHD is our most important local partner in this regard, particularly when it comes to finding young talent and graduates for our industry, driving pipeline developments forward, and expanding our network."

Torsten Rex | Mediainterface GmbH

"The collaboration between MediaInterface Ltd. and the students of the Digital Media Design programme is characterised by mutual appreciation and learning effects. Our focus on functional processes is wonderfully complemented by the students' creative skills. We keep all components and areas, whether software, product or marketing, up to date."
