From 17 to 31 July 2026, Dresden University of Applied Sciences welcomed 34 lecturers and 12 students from Jinzhong College of Information in Shanxi Province, People’s Republic of China. During the two-week summer school, participants gained a wide range of insights into the German higher education system, as well as into culture, society and history. Following last year’s successful event, the FHD thus successfully continued this international exchange programme once again.
The programme was organised and supervised by Chi Ziesmann. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Chóngliàng Zhòng and David Gollasch, as an external lecturer, were involved in the academic planning. The programme also received support from the student body: Julia Feldmann, a student on the Tourism & Event Management course, played an active role in leading the excursions and facilitating intercultural exchange.
The academic part of the Summer School focused on key topics relating to international cooperation and modern communication. In the workshops led by Dr.-Ing. Dr. Chóngliàng Zhòng, participants explored ‘Intercultural Communication’, ‘Communication & Presentation Skills’ and ‘Team & Leadership’. David Gollasch complemented the programme with a workshop entitled ‘Leveraging AI in Human-Centred Design’.
The academic content was complemented by a varied programme of excursions and cultural activities . Among other things, the guests visited Dresden’s Old Town, various museums and the Saxon State Parliament. Other programme highlights included visits to Wackerbarth Castle, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory and Saxon Switzerland. A day trip to Prague was also part of the Summer School.
The programme thus combined theoretical insights with practical on-site experiences. Participants were not only able to learn more about the German higher education and education system, but also to experience cultural, historical and political contexts first-hand.
On the final day of the Summer School, the participants looked back together on two intensive weeks full of new impressions, encounters and experiences. As part of the closing ceremony, they received their certificates from Jasmin Schöne, Chancellor of Dresden University of Applied Sciences.
A group photo on the roof terrace and numerous warm words of farewell marked the end of their time together at the Dresden University of Applied Sciences. Feedback from the participants was consistently positive. The varied programme, the practical excursions and the opportunity to get to know Germany and the Dresden University of Applied Sciences first-hand were particularly appreciated.
The Summer School makes an important contribution to the internationalisation of Dresden University of Applied Sciences. It enhances the university’s international profile, promotes intercultural dialogue and supports the FHD’s strategic focus on international cooperation.
At the same time, the programme deepens the exchange between Dresden University of Applied Sciences and Jinzhong College of Information. Building on these positive experiences, discussions are underway regarding further forms of cooperation. Among other things, possibilities for student and staff exchanges, joint continuing professional development programmes and a potential double-degree programme are being explored.
With the Summer School, the FHD is setting an example for international cooperation, practice-oriented higher education and exchange across national and cultural boundaries.
