FHD brings university education to the region

With a well-attended open day at the Annaberg-Buchholz Learning Centre, FHD has sent a clear message: higher education belongs not only in the big cities, but right at the heart of the regions.

The marketing and student advisory team at FHD, comprising Jonas Gelbrich, Jasmin Kellermann and Lina Kröber, demonstrated how a degree programme – including part-time study – can be structured in practice and what opportunities are available to prospective students. The focus was on the university’s strategic vision.

Rector Dr. habil. Heike Zimmermann-Timm emphasised:

“We bring higher education to where people live and work. There is enormous potential, particularly in rural areas – for skilled workers, for innovation and for sustainable development.”

With his visit, Mayor Rolf Schmidt acknowledged the importance of the event for the region and highlighted the role of education as the key to the area’s future viability. The focus was on the part-time degree programmes in Nursing and Health Management (B.A.) and Social Pedagogy and Management (B.A.). These programmes, particularly when combined with existing professional experience, open up new career paths, for example in management roles within social services, the healthcare sector or educational institutions. Josefine Schütze, joining online from the FHD’s Student Services Office, provided a practical explanation of the opportunities for part-time entry into the programmes and the recognition of prior professional experience.

A particular highlight was the live link-up with Dresden: Acting Professor Dr Oliver Franken provided insights into the course “Fundamentals of Social Management” and gave an interactive, first-hand impression of the degree programme.

The programme was complemented by other partners, including Susan Bitterlich-Thiele (AWV), who presented various pathways for professional development.
Through its commitment, the FHD is pursuing a clear goal: to strengthen Annaberg-Buchholz as an educational hub in the long term and to develop it further in collaboration with regional stakeholders. “We don’t just want to provide
qualifications; we want to empower people to actively help shape the future of their region,” said Rector Zimmermann-Timm.
