Jennifer in Argentina: a semester abroad as part of the Tourism & Event Management degree programme at Dresden University of Applied Sciences.

Jennifer's semester abroad in Buenos Aires

Jennifer, a student on the Tourism & Event Management course, spent her semester abroad in the vibrant metropolis of Buenos Aires at our partner university, the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE), one of Argentina’s most prestigious institutions of higher education. Thanks to the existing partnership and funding from the Erasmus grant, she was able to realise her dream of spending a semester abroad.

During her time in South America, Jennifer not only immersed herself in the lively city life of Buenos Aires, but also discovered Argentina’s impressive variety of landscapes. She also took the opportunity to travel to other countries, gathering unforgettable memories in Brazil and Uruguay.

South America – a continent of contrasts

Why did you choose Argentina?

I chose Argentina for my semester abroad because I really wanted to experience a new culture and improve my Spanish. Buenos Aires has always fascinated me! The city is incredibly vibrant, full of music, culture and people from all over the world. I also wanted to really step out of my comfort zone and spend a semester living on another continent.

How did you fund your semester abroad?

I funded my semester abroad using my own savings, the BAföG for studying abroad and the Erasmus programme. Without this support, a stay abroad would have been much more difficult. The BAföG for studying abroad and Erasmus in particular are great ways to make a semester abroad possible.

How did you organise your stay abroad?

There was quite a bit to organise beforehand, though – for example, the application to the partner university, the funding, the visa and, of course, finding accommodation there. It involved quite a lot of paperwork at times, but the FHD supported me very well throughout and was always there to help with any questions.

Where did you live?

During my semester, I lived in a shared flat in the Palermo district. The neighbourhood is really lively and full of cafés, restaurants, bars and parks.

What were your highlights in Argentina?

My biggest highlights in Argentina were definitely the people and the culture. Argentinians are incredibly open, warm and full of life. I also had the chance to travel a lot. I discovered loads of places in Argentina and also travelled to Brazil and Uruguay. This meant I got to see even more of South America and I loved every single place.

Would you recommend other students to go abroad during their studies?

I would really recommend to everyone that they spend a semester abroad whilst studying. You grow so much from the experience, become more independent and get to know people from all over the world. It’s simply a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Do you have any tips for students who are still planning their semester or internship abroad?

My advice to anyone planning a semester abroad: start organising early, find out about funding opportunities and be open to new experiences. Things don’t always go to plan, but that’s exactly what makes time abroad so special!

How would you describe your experience abroad in terms of your future career?

The semester abroad was also a very valuable experience for my future career. International experience and intercultural skills are particularly important in the fields of tourism and event management. Through living and studying abroad, I’ve learnt to adapt quickly to new situations and to work with people from different cultures.

How would you sum up your semester abroad in three words?

If I had to describe my semester abroad in three words, they would be: intense, unforgettable, magical. ☺️✨
