Private universities are no longer a niche phenomenon. But why do we need them?

This is the question explored by Rector Dr. habil. Heike Zimmermann-Timm in a recent guest article on the renowned Wiarda Blog.

Drawing on the German Science and Humanities Council’s current recommendations, she discusses the role of private higher education institutions in Germany’s academic system – between academic quality, research and knowledge transfer, flexible study models, and securing skilled workers at the regional level.

She also takes a self-critical look at the Fachhochschule Dresden and at the question of how small, practice-oriented higher education institutions can position themselves for the future.
