I spent my semester abroad in Barcelona from September to January. Barcelona is a beautiful city that never sleeps. There is something exciting to see on every corner and it is teeming with people, especially tourists. The best things about this city are definitely the numerous sights, ornate buildings, viewing platforms and its proximity to the sea. The underground network is also so well organised that you can easily get anywhere on foot or by train.
I lived with a fellow student in the El Raval district. At first, we experienced a bit of culture shock, as neither of us were used to the constant noise and crowds, but over time, our neighbourhood grew on us. Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that the crime rate in Barcelona is quite high, so you should always keep an eye on yourself and your belongings. Basically, however, most Catalans are very open-minded and friendly.
I attended university four days a week. During this time, I studied at the CETT - School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy. A big advantage for me was that the courses were offered in English, as my Spanish (let alone my Catalan) would not have been sufficient. ;) All the courses brought together many international students from all over the world. This allowed me to meet lots of new people from different cultures and backgrounds. The lecturers were also very friendly, helpful and always available to offer support.
On my days off and at the weekend, I explored many great places in and outside the city and visited a few clubs. I personally recommend "Pacha" – but the entrance fee is very expensive. However, you always have to expect high costs in Barcelona, so it's up to each individual to decide how to invest their money. ;)
Basically, I can recommend a semester abroad to anyone, as you gain so many exciting impressions, meet new people and surpass yourself. You also learn to overcome challenges and make the best of different situations. In my opinion, anyone who has the opportunity should definitely take it. :)
