Sven, Tourism & Event Management (B.A.)

Hello Sven! After graduating, you started working as a project manager at CAGGTUS Leipzig. What aspect of your job excited you the most?

For me, it's the variety. Event management has a lot to offer in terms of methodology, but the wide range of different topics and partners means that you move in many different directions. The learning effect is not to be underestimated.

Did you imagine yourself doing this kind of work when you started your studies? Did you know from the outset what field you wanted to work in?

No, definitely not. Fresh out of school, I didn't have a clear idea of which direction I wanted to go in. However, while studying at the FHD, event management emerged as the right path for me, and I have remained faithful to it. Since every event is unique in many ways and the management behind it is often confronted with new content, I have not regretted my decision.

What were your expectations of the course and were they met?

Two things were important to me: on the one hand, the constant practical relevance, which is a requirement at the FHD and which was fulfilled. On the other hand, the mix of content from event management and tourism. Both subject areas overlap and therefore lent themselves to being taught. Even if you decide on one of the two directions, you can always gain experience and added value from the other.

In your opinion, what should someone bring to a degree programme in this field?

I can't give a universal answer to that. Certainly a desire for new knowledge, but that's a prerequisite for any degree programme. So perhaps to put it another way: simply enjoying travelling or going to concerts is helpful and a good foundation, but it won't automatically be enough to pass every module. ;)

What is the most valuable experience from your time as a student?

Believe it or not, these experiences lie outside the lecture hall. Although your time as a student is mainly characterised by your studies, you should also appreciate other things: taking your first steps on the career ladder, getting to know and connecting with other students, or moving into your first flat. Coupled with a certain openness and responsibility, this can result in a great degree programme.

What did you enjoy the most – which moments have stayed with you?

In my case, it was the semester abroad that I was able to spend at a Scottish university in my fifth semester. A completely new environment, a different and, in this case, even strange-sounding language, and some new content have stayed with me. But to stay with everyday life at the FHD: the discussion of certain topics, which often filled one or two lessons with critical questioning.
