A creative degree course – that was Joy’s dream, which she was able to fulfil at Dresden University of Applied Sciences. On the Graphic Design: Screen & Print Media course, she learnt to apply her creativity in a solution-oriented way, to work on real client projects and, in doing so, to gain a real sense of achievement. Armed with this knowledge, Joy is now well prepared to enter the world of work and has all the tools she needs to succeed. Find out more about our graduate Joy in this interview!

Why did you decide to study graphic design back then?

I chose to study graphic design because I really wanted to do something creative, and this course allows you to explore many different areas of design.

Which projects or pieces of work had a particular impact on you during your studies?

The corporate design projects with real clients helped me a great deal. They were very extensive projects with long conceptual phases, during which we were able to really delve into the subject in depth. Working with real clients was also very interesting, as you have to communicate differently with people who aren’t designers in order to convey your ideas effectively. The illustration course also had a big impact on me. I’d originally considered studying illustration, but opted for graphic design because it’s more versatile. The illustration course allowed me to explore this subject in greater depth, so I didn’t have to miss out on it.

How important was the personal support from the professors and lecturers to you?

It’s very important to me and one of the reasons why I value my studies at the FHD so much. The lecturers and professors have a wealth of professional experience or are even still working in the industry outside the university. That’s why you can always ask them for advice on the current situation in the industry.

In your view, what makes the graphic design degree at the FHD unique compared to other programmes?

For me, the course stands out because of its small seminar groups and the wide range of subject areas. As well as classic graphic design topics such as typography, corporate design and web design, we also covered areas such as photography, artistic design, 3D development and illustration. In some modules, you can also choose a topic that particularly interests you. For example, I focused on 2D animation and worked on the concept and design of a games app for children.

How has the degree programme changed your creativity and your perspective on design?

Although I was already a creative person before starting my degree, the course has enabled me to apply my creativity in a solution-oriented way.

What advice would you give to prospective students and applicants considering a degree in graphic design at the FHD?

Don’t be put off by the artistic aptitude test – just go ahead and apply. At the time, I was worried about submitting the wrong things, because there are lots of guides on putting together a portfolio that warn against certain motifs or techniques. However, this fear was completely unfounded, and the interview was actually quite fun.
