Programme Profile

In the degree programme Social Work and Management (M.A.), managers in social work are trained at an academic level. Thus, the degree programme not only teaches professional knowledge and skills in the field of social pedagogy and social work, but also places a further emphasis on social management.
The Master's programme normally lasts 4 semesters. You will acquire the state and internationally recognised Master of Arts (M.A.), which qualifies you for leading positions in the social sector.
 

Course content

The aim of the "Social Work and Management (M.A.)" course is to provide students with professional knowledge and skills as well as in-depth specialist and methodological knowledge in the field of social education / social work and social management. Key areas of content include

  • Performative interventions of social work
  • Systemic social management
  • Specific methods of reflection
  • Social work and values / ethics
  • Sustainability and crisis management in social work
  • Corporate and personnel management
  • Product development and marketing
  • Company foundation and financing

While Bachelor's degree courses in the field of social work usually focus on working with children, adolescents and young adults, students on this Master's degree course are prepared for working with a much broader target group: They not only learn to support and accompany clients of all ages on a person-related basis, but also to work with staff in social economy institutions as well as with state and official actors and stakeholders in social administration. With this degree, you will be able to manage companies in the social economy and independently develop and implement innovative services and solutions in the field of social work.

Study structure

The programme begins in the winter semester and is completed in 4 semesters. 120 credit points are earned throughout the programme, with one credit point corresponding to 30 hours of work. You complete various modules, each of which includes attending lectures (including preparation and follow-up work), self-study and taking examinations.

Practical and application-oriented studies

The combination of technical and methodological competences and their application in real work situations is an elementary component of the degree programme. You can apply your theoretical knowledge in your own projects and optimally link theory and practice in practical transfer and reflection seminars.

Degree and career prospects

Upon successful completion of the consecutive Master's programme "Social Work and Management (M.A.)", graduates are awarded the academic Master's degree with the title Master of Arts (M.A.).

With a degree in social work, graduates can be employed in many sectors in various occupational fields and have very good career prospects in view of the social structures. Graduates can take up senior positions in various fields of social work and are able to work professionally at staff and management level. Possible fields of work are, for example:

  • Youth welfare offices

  • Schools and day care centres

  • Work with and for people with disabilities or mental illnesses

  • Homes and family centres

  • Counselling centres

  • Education, training and further education

  • Research and evaluation

In addition, there are employment opportunities in public authorities, offices, in politics, in the free economy and very often in church or other social institutions, which in their work look after people who are disadvantaged in society. In addition, there are now also more and more interesting jobs for social workers in companies in the free economy, for example, in advising employees or in the area of personnel. The Master's programme at the FHD also enables graduates to promote, found and manage their own social projects and ideas.

As a private university, the FHD is not supported by public funds, but must finance itself completely. As an FHD Bachelor graduate, you will receive a 10% discount on tuition fees.

Study requirements and application

The programme is aimed at graduates who have already obtained a first university degree recognised in Germany with at least 180 credit points (Bachelor's or Diplom degree). The following Bachelor's degree programmes are considered relevant: Degrees in the field of social work, social pedagogy, social pedagogy and management, social management, childhood pedagogy, sociology, psychology, as well as related degree programmes that do not show any significant differences in content, scope and requirements to those.
