Outgoing Students

Students at FHD planning to study or to do an internship abroad for one or two semesters are referred to as Outgoings.

You will find important notes and information about a study-related stay abroad on the following pages. If you have any questions or need help, you can seek advice from the International Office with a prior registration.

Study Abroad

FHD has a constantly expanding network of university cooperation. Please find out more about our partner universities on the website or inform yourself in the International Office. The International Office will accompany you through the whole process of application.

You can also choose an institution for your semester abroad with which we have no existing cooperation partnership. In this case, you are a so-called Free Mover and should apply on your own. Please note the requirements, deadlines and regulations at the host university. If you have any questions, please contact the International Office with prior registration.

Advantages of studying at our partners

  •     often cheaper tuition fees
  •     simplified application/ registration / enrollment
  •     professional and organizational support before, during and after the semester abroad

Course content

Courses must be attended during the semester abroad. Please note that the content of courses at the host university may differ from the study regulations at FHD. Please consult the academic contact person in your faculty regarding your Learning Agreement.

Selection of the host university

Before application, you should be clear about your professional and personal goals. Do you want to deepen a certain focus of your studies? Does a certain foreign language attract you? You can look for a partner university that suits your needs. You may look for a host university from around the world as well and clarify the admission formalities with them. Regardless of how you decide - the International Office is always ready to help.

Programmes:

Ein Semester Programm: 30 ECTS,  courses in English and/or Spanish (depending on the University you choose)

Financing and funding opportunities

One semester abroad often brings additional financial burden. It is therefore important to inform yourself about potential financing and funding options at an early stage. You should allow eight to twelve months for the research and planning. There are various possibilities of financing a semester, an internship, a language course abroad, e.g. through private funds, Auslands-BAföG or scholarships. You have to differentiate between studies and internships. We have summarized the most common programs for you hier. Information on funding opportunities, programs, deadlines and application forms can be found on the homepage of DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service (Homepage des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes). A comprehensive scholarship database with all funding programs ( Stipendiendatenbank ) is available to you here.

Auslands-BAföG

Different authorities are responsible for different destination countries when it comes to BAföG applications. You can find the right authority for the country of your choice on the BAföG-Server des BMBF . Internships abroad are also funded, provided that they are beneficial for the study.

You can find information at www.auslandsbafoeg.de.

Living Abroad

There are also various options for finding accommodation during a semester abroad or an internship abroad:

  •     WG (Student residence)
  •     Residence
  •     flat/apartment
  •     Host family

After being admitted to the host university, you have to begin with finding accommodation 2-3 months before the semester starts. You can apply for a room in the dormitory, rent a flat outside of the campus, or stay at a host family. More details regarding this subject are on the fact sheets of our partners.

If you have any problem with finding the suitable accommodation, please contact the International Office at FHD or your host university abroad at least 2 months before the start of your exchange semester.

Interships Abroad

Interships Abroad

For students who are interested in a stay abroad, a practical semester also offers the opportunity to gain international experience. You can obtain information from the Career Service or from your faculty about the vacancies and opportunities for an internship abroad. You can also find out more regularly on the FHD notice boards and on ILIAS. More information here.

Summer School

Summer schools or summer courses are condensed, fee-based scientific specialist courses of 2-10 weeks that are offered during the lecture-free period. This is an organized program with fixed groups, with a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, language lessons and excursions. The advantage: You can get to know university life, the teaching methods and content of a foreign university, even if a whole semester abroad is too long or too expensive or you do not want to take a semester off. In addition, the preparation time is rather short. The best thing to do is to look directly on the homepages of the universities in the desired country for the summer courses offered. You can find an overview of the courses offered at

The application is made directly to the organizer of the respective summer schools.

Summer schools usually have to be self-financed. In order to find suitable funding, you have to take action yourself and do research on the Internet.

Safety instructions and insurance coverage

The FHD recommends all students who are planning a stay abroad to carefully inform themselves about the conditions in the host country or the target region. Please note the general travel advice (allgemeinen Reisehinweise) from the Federal Foreign Office.

Before going abroad, you should clarify with your health insurance company whether your health insurance cover is also valid abroad. Additional protection can be useful. Find out more from your health insurance company, online consumer portals (e.g. 1AKrankenversicherung oder www.mawista.com).or on the DAAD website (Webseite des DAAD). In a few cases you have to take out health insurance through the foreign university.

Additional information on health insurance for students can also be found on consumer portals on the Internet (e.g. 1AKrankenversicherung oder www.mawista.com)
You should also consider private accident and liability insurance for the duration of your stay abroad. If you have health insurance abroad, you should note that repatriation of the patient to your home country will be covered in an emergency.

Accident and liability insurance can also be useful - especially for internships abroad. In any case, first ask your insurance company whether you are also insured abroad before you take out new insurance.

DAAD group insurance
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers interns, students and scientists who go abroad from Germany a low-cost, combined health, accident and personal liability insurance through its group contract. You can find comprehensive information on the DAAD website (Webseite des DAAD).
